This route is easily accessible but not often used. It can be accessed from Bannerman Park at the north end of Porcupine Lake or from an access road shown on the map in this database. Due to the low number of users, the route has ample opportunities for wildlife viewing. The problem with this trip is the high duckweed and algae content of the water in July and August. This reflects a rich organic nutrient level in the river possibly due to human settlements at minesites in the past. The river winds in a northeasterly direction which takes the canoeist behind the Owl Creek Mine and the Kidd Creek Metallurgical site. In spite of the proximity to mining sites, there are signs of an active wildlife community.
The length of the trip can be as long as the canoeist decides. If the plan is to travel all the way to Nighthawk Lake, two days will be required. Near a rapids just past the large culvert bridge a grave location may be found on the north shore.
