The Redstone River crosses the Springs Road (which begins as Tisdale St. and later turns into Stringer's Road) about 10 km south of Connaught Hill in South Porcupine. Refer to map on previous screen.
The Redstone can be explored in an easterly or westerly direction from the Springs Road Bridge. The easterly or downstream section will take the canoeist down to Nighthawk Lake, a distance of about 18 km. There is a
1 km. portage around a long set of rapids about 1 km. east of the bridge. After that the water is generally flat and slow moving although there are a couple of unmarked swifts in the upper end. The waters of Nighthawk Lake are treacherous due to the shallow nature of the lake. Winds can whip up waves rather quickly. There are also many shallow rocks and deadheads left from lumbering days.
The westerly or upstream side can be followed to a set of rapids and falls about 20 km. up from the bridge. The first rapids has a 1.5 km. portage around it. Following that there are five more portages around rapids and waterfalls.
The Ministry of Natural resources produced maps of this route as part of a series of canoe trips through the Timmins area. Although they are out of print as of the writing of this page, photocopies are still available at the Timmins District MNR Office in Porcupine.
