This is a one day outing that can be done in about three hours. There is one set of rapids that will have to be examined and possibly lined around (lowering your canoe over the rapids with rope). Groundhog Lake has cottages on it, and the first part of the river is well used although there is a good chance you will not see anyone on the trip.
Leave one vehicle at the highway where 101 crosses the Groundhog River. There is room to park on the north side of the highway on the west side of the river.
Drive the second vehicle to Groundhog Lake. Follow the first sign to Palomar and then turn off to the left a little less than one km down the road. Follow this road for about four km and then turn off on the public access road to the lake. There is plenty of room to park here. Launch the canoes and travel across Groundhog Lake to enter the mouth of the river. Follow the river north to the highway being careful to check for the rapids found about seven or eight km into the trip.
