The 4 M trip is named after four major lakes each beginning with an M. Mesomikenda is a large lake with cottages and commercial camps. Makami Lake is a long and narrow lake with a sandy bottom and large boulders scattered throughout. Minisinakwa is another large lake with the town of Gogama located at its upper end. Mollie Lake is a medium sized lake located at the south end of the loop. It enters into Dividing Lake the beginning of the loop.

There are several alternative route routes to the main loop. The main route begins at Dividing Lake and heads north into Three Duck Lake followed in turn by Bagsverd Lake, Schist Lake, Schou Lake, Wolf Lake, Somme Lake, Neville Lake and Mesomikenda Lake. At this point you could head south on Mesomikenda or choose to continue into Makami Lake and the Makami River down to Miniskinakwa Lake and Gogama. To return to Dividing Lake follow the Mollie River south through Mollie Lake and back to the beginning.

The trip could be shortened by using Wizard Lake which takes the canoeist back to Highway 144 or even to begin at the trip at Wizard and head north to meet the Makami River.
