This is a short but interesting trip. About 6 km south of the Gogama turnoff on Highway 144, there is a turnoff to the right that takes you to the south end of Wizard Lake. There is a boat launching here and campers are often parked near the water. Launch your canoes here. The lake is interrupted about a kilometer north of the put-in point by a causeway over which the CNR tracks are located. This necessitates a portage up and over the causeway. Once on the other side it is clear sailing up to the end of the lake.
There are rocky cliffs on the east side of the river and the railroad runs along the west side. You have a very clear view of passing trains.
At the end of the lake is a rapids which makes for a convenient lunch stop. If you were to continue down the rapids, you would be in the Makami River which is part of the 4M canoe route. This section would require canoeing skill and endurance due to the rapids. The canoe can be lined down the rapids.
For a day trip it is recommended you stop here and go back. Once into the rapids, you are somewhat committed to go downstream.
