In the early days the main road south from Timmins went through the Buffalo Ankerite Property. It is possible to explore many old abandoned minesites through a series of roads that are marked on topographic maps available at local outdoor stores. At the present time cyclists face a flooding problem near the start caused by beavers as the roads are no longer maintained. Local residents cycle the roads and are aware of wet areas. Since the beaver dams are often broken, the flooding of the roadway can change. It is worth having a look at the many kilometres of old roads that can be traveled in this area behind the present day Buffalo Ankerite Property.
To reach the trailhead from Schumacher, head south across the highway and turn right on First Avenue. Turn left on Poplar St. and follow it after it turns into Vipond Road. In less than one kilometre there is a T intersection. Turn left here on the Gold Mine Road. Follow this for about 2 kilometres until you see a sign on the right side indicating the Buffalo Ankerite Property. Take this road up the short hill and on through the old mining property. Park at the end of this road and begin your walking or biking expedition.
The road is sometimes flooded due to overactive beavers intent on creating ponds. These sections are not very numerous and are not long, but they can be a nuisance to get across. Using a topographic map you will be able to get some appreciation for the past history of the area. Abandoned mine workings can be seen although the buildings and headframes have long since come down.
The outing ends up back where you started.
