To walk or bike to High Falls, drive about 3.5 km west from the Timmins Chamber of Commerce Information Centre and turn left on Cameron Street. Travel about one kilometre to the top of Cameron Hill and turn right just past Confederation Arena on Dalton Road. This road will take you past residences which are located on the Mattagami River as well as past the Spruce Needles Golf Club. Follow Dalton Road for 18 km from Cameron Street until you come to the top of the hill just before a steep descent into the Grassy River Valley.
Park your car at the top of the hill and look for a trail that begins on the south side of the road. It is often used by ATVs in the summer and skidoos in the winter. The trail heads south and follows the river. At various points along the trail you can see down to the river from the top of a sandy ridge. The distance is about 12 km to the falls. Walking time is about 3 hours there and 3 hours back.
The falls are also accessible by driving down the Musgrove road. The turn off is about 1.7 km past the Grassy River bridge on the Dalton Road. Turn left and drive about 12 km south. Turn left off Musgrove road just before the kilometre 12 marker. Follow the old lumber road passing through a reforested area keeping left at the first fork in the road. Drive to the end of the road where there is a clear area for parking and look for the trail down to the river. This entrance allows for walking along the west side of the river with a good view of the rapids and falls. Hopefully a walking trail along the river will be developed.
To canoe the grassy from high falls down to the bridge on Dalton Road, it is necessary to portage the canoe from the road a short distance to the water. The stopping point along the Musgrove road is at the 9.8 km mark from the Dalton Road. Park your vehicle along the road and look for markers through the clear-cut on the east side of the road. Carry the canoe about 400 m. downhill to the river. A second vehicle could be left at the Grassy River bridge back on the Dalton Road to facilitate the return. From High Falls to the Dalton Road bridge is 11 km. Allow about three hours for the trip. Best done in the spring.
Comments: This canoe trip is more challenging. Although there are no rapids, as such, the river can be fast moving in May or June and shallow in July or August. The flow is controlled by a dam at Peterlong Lake. Check the water flowing under the bridge on the Dalton Road before taking the trip. If the little island immediately on the north side is visible water is low.
