The trailhead is located on Pine Street South between Ogden Avenue and Moneta Avenue The trail follows an abandoned rail bed down to the Mattagami River. This trail passes through a residential area before winding its way downhill through a wooded and a farming area eventually ending up at the new boat launching facility on the river.
The trail is lighted with decorative street lamps lining the path for walking in the evening. Walkers and bicyclists use the trail to explore a part of the city not usually seen by passengers in cars.
Once at the boat-launch site walkers or bicyclists can cross the busy Algonquin Boulevard by going over the Mattagami Bridge and then going under the bridge on the other side. This brings walkers out at the Mattagami Park where the park and streets of Mountjoy can be explored.
Mattagami Park is the beginning of the Bridge-to-Bridge Trail that takes the walker or cyclist up Norman Street to the Lafleur Bridge and then along the east side of the river back down to Algonquin Blvd. and over the bridge back to Mattagami Park. Look up the Bridge-to-Bridge route in the Walking Trail section of this database.
For the ambitious walker/bicyclist, the trip can continue along Park Road, accessed at the north end of the Mattagami Park, ending up at Shirley Street and then down to the Timmins Square for lunch.
