Yellow Lady's-Slipper

These flowers bloom from early to mid June. They are described as being scarce in Northern Ontario. We are fortunate to have a few places where they can be seen near Timmins. Because they are scarce they must be protected. These photos were taken in a clump of plants located not far from the Porcupine Lake Trail.

LadyÕs-slippers are members of the orchid family which also includes the more common pink ladyÕs-slipper plant and the very rare Timmins orchid a plant found only in Timmins. Orchids should not be picked as it takes ten years from germination for the plants to flower.

Although we sometimes think of our ecosystems as being rugged and hardy there are many exceptions in the beautiful yet delicate wild flowers we have here. Another plant found around the Porcupine Lake trail is the nodding trillium. Although not quite as showy as its southern white trillium, the floral emblem of Ontario, the nodding variety is quite beautiful and exciting to find.
