Mattagami River

Canoeing on the Mattagami is a great way to experience the city. Beginning at the waterfront park just south of the Mattagami bridge on Algonquin Avenue the canoeist can travel downstream 20 km to Sandy Falls or 13 km upstream to Wawaitin Falls. The river is usually calm but has a slight current. The view along the trip includes the backyards of many impressive Timmins homes as well as farmland and bush. As part of the upstream trip a stop at the Spruce Needles Golf Club can be made for lunch or supper before the return. Downstream the river parallels Riverside Drive for a while and then passes homes along Kraft Creek Road.

Another entry to the river can be made at the Malette Bridge. Turn left just past the Grant Oriented Strandboard plant about 10 km west of downtown Timmins and put in at the bridge found less than 1 km south of the highway.

The river can also be accessed below Wawaitin Falls off Dalton Road near the power plant or below Sandy Falls at the boat launching site on the north side of the river
