Trail Around Porcupine Lake

This photo was taken on the Bart Thompson Trail around Porcupine Lake. It is a trail that is highly prized by those who use it. This part of the trail is on the far side of the lake opposite the South Porcupine townsite between Deadman's Point and the Placer Dome pump house. The trail can be accessed from any point around the lake. As you walk through the built up section of town just keep turning toward the lake and you will find the trail. See a map under the Bart Thompson Walking Trail as part of this database.

The trail is mainly through wooded areas with vistas of the lake on many occasions. As you circle around the north part of the trail you enter the town of Porcupine where gold was first discovered on Porcupine Lake. The Hunter Mine on the top of the hill off LoverÕs Lane is one of the earliest mines. An attempt to reopen it got as far as building a new headframe in the late 1980s.

Deadman's Point is the beautiful location for the Whitney Cemetery. A large plaque is located there to commemorate the contributions made by businesses in Toronto that sent relief supplies to the survivors of the deadly fire of 1911. The remains of those who died are also buried here.
