Porcupine River

This photo was taken on the Porcupine River just north of the Kinross mine road. See the canoe route description under canoe routes in this database. It is a river that sustains a good moose population and evidence of these large animals can often be seen along the shore. They come to the shallow water to eat vegetation particularly the roots of bulrushes and water lilies.

This river has an interesting history. It was the original route into the Porcupine for the early prospectors, before that the Hudson Bay fur traders and predating the fur trade, natives followed its waterway. Now it is rarely used except for the occasional canoeist and moose hunter in the fall.

It is recommended canoeist use the route in June or early July as duckweed covers the river as summer progresses. There is a very slow water flow at this time.
