The Terry Fox/Waterfront Trail ends up at the Mattagami River waterfront but actually begins on Pine Street South. It follows an old rail bed that used to connect the downtown with sawmills, long since gone, along the river. The trail is popular with walkers and cyclists.
From its beginning on Pine Street South, between Ogden and Moneta Avenues, the trail is relatively flat passing through a residential area. On the right you will see greenhouses. If the windows are open, you might glimpse tables full of flowering plants. The trail ends at the river waterfront, part of the Mountjoy Historical Conservation Area, an area set aside following the disastrous flood of 1960. It is always interesting to see what is happening at the waterfront during the summer with boats being launched, water skiers going by and canoeists paddling by. From here cyclists can bike up to Algonquin Boulevard, cross the bridge, follow the trail under the bridge and emerge on the north side. A trip out to the Timmins Square for lunch could round out the journey.
