Resource Books

The following books are recommended sources for more information on the natural history of Timmins:

The Mattagami Region Conservation Authority through the Wintergreen Foundation sells an excellent booklet called the Natural History of the Timmins Area. It describes the plants and wildlife found in the vicinity of Timmins. Outdoor Adventure Maps of Timmins and the Gogama area are also available. Contact the Mattagami Regional Conservation Authority in Timmins (see address in left-hand column).

They also sell a print guide to the trails called A Guide to the Recreational Trails in the City of Timmins as well as free guides for specific walking trails.

An excellent publication was written by authors who work for Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources entitled Forest Plants of Northeastern Ontario. The publisher is Lone Star Publishing. It can be purchased in bookstores across Ontario. Try the Timmins Museum and National Exhibition bookstore.

A booklet called Field Guide for the Porcupine Demonstration Forest is available from the MNR in Timmins. It describes forestry practices in Timmins using the Gibson Lake Road and Ice Chest Lake Road as examples of how forestry can be done responsibly.
