The coming of winter with its blanket of snow and frozen lakes opens up a whole new range of activities for the non-motorized enjoyment of our outdoors. Snow covers the ground for about five months of the year beginning in mid November and lasting until the end of March. During this time the opportunites to get out and snow-shoe or cross-country ski are unparalleled. Excellent downhill skiing is also available 30 minutes from downtown Timmins with the season beginning in mid December and lasting through March. Even though the temperature may be cold, if you are dressed warmly it is quite comfortable even at minus 20 degrees Centigrade. Even paraskiing is a possibility. (See paraski video.)
With the sun shining and usually very little wind, many of the one thousand members of the Porcupine Ski Runners Cross Country club are out most days of the winter. Skiing can last for three months of the year. The trails are groomed by volunteers who get up very early in the morning after a snow fall to get out and groom the trails. The club is located in Schumacher, only 1 km east of the Timmins Chamber of Commerce building. Groomed cross-country trails are also maintained at Kettle Lakes Provincial Park during the winter. A warm-up shack is located near the beginning of the trail which users can fire up so it is warm on their return. Take a lunch for a great outdoor winter-day activity with the family. Kettle Lakes is also a great place to snow shoe. (See Trail System Map)
In addition to the groomed cross-country trails, northerners ski and snow-shoe on informal trails in all the parks especially Hersey Lake, the northern section of the Bart Thompson Trail, and many of the other walking trails (see maps of walking trails).
